SHOT OF THE DAY – AURORA, MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA

Shooting the Aurora Australis has been an obsession of mine for several years. A few failed attempts, a few mediocre efforts, one missed ‘once in a lifetime event’, and then this night on Aug 12 2024. I finally captured my first serious aurora.

The readings thruout the day were solid, without being spectacular. There had been strong aurora activity reported in the northern hemisphere but we didn’t think it would last into the Australian evening. But as darkness fell, the clouds disappeared and I made my way 1hr south to Blind Bight area to try my luck. Almost immediately some action presented itself. But the real treat was at about 11.30pm. The sky turned a deep red and white beams could be clearly seen dancing across the sky. It was exhilarating to witness and extremely satisfying to shoot.

I had the opportunity to try for several different shots and others perhaps have better composure, but the colours in this image made this my…shot of the day (night).

Look out for my aurora article coming soon..
