SHOT OF THE DAY – AURORA, YACKANDANDAH, AUSTRALIA
Its been a solid year for aurora activity in Australia. Went from very little in 3 years to 3 in the last year. I feel like its mostly luck, but also the peak of sun activity and being a better judge of when there will be action.
January 1st 2025 was a welcome start with nature’s own firework display. I happened to be on holiday much further north than usual in Yackandandah on the NSW/Vic border. The readings thru the day suggested there could be something and I was lucky to be in a rural area where I could walk 20m to a favorable spot, even if the horizon was covered by a hill and trees. Keeping a very close eye to Facebook groups is key to see what others are getting and then responding fast. There was a burst at 11.30pm, 1.30 am and and about 430am. This image taken at 11.30pm. The sky showed deep crimson hues and strong beams. A thrill as always. Was happy with the quality of this arurora on camera and considering was at high latitude with no horizon on view. A great start to 2025.
Look out for my aurora article coming soon..
